How frustrating.   I cannot get the computer to connect with the Wi-Fi at this hotel.  I cannot get the pictures to load on to the Blog page.  I will just write a bit more for you and publish when I can.

We left the lovely hotel in Caen today for excursions to the Peace Memorial, Bayeux and the Normandy beaches.   What a full day.  First we went to the Peace Memorial in Caen and it was full of information and images about the state of the world before the outbreak of the Second World War.  Although it was informative, I was really interested in the specific activities of the invasion of Normandy.

We took a break, drove to Bayeux and visited the famous Bayeux Tapestry.  It is not really a tapestry, but an amazing piece of embroidery.  It depicts the Battle of Hastings and victory of William the Conqueror.  Its age is almost 1,000 years and the colors and creativity are still very evident. .  Bayeux is a lovely town with a huge cathedral also.   We visited it, saw beautiful stained glass windows, great carved pillars and a beautifully gilded pulpit.  I am reminded of traveling with Emily as a child.  After the third or fourth cathedral, she was done.  I was a bit overwhelmed by all the information presented today, too.

Back in the car for a drive to the Normandy beaches and our hotel in Arronmanches. This is a small and rather touristy place, but the beach and the artificial “harbors” designed by the Allied invaders and still evident off the coast were very interesting.  We also traveled to see Omaha and Utah beaches, the American Cemetery and Memorial, an outdoor museum of German gun fortifications and beautiful countryside to beat.  The sun peeked in and out from behind clouds all day, but generally, it was wonderful weather in which to tour.

We returned to Arromanches for a drink at a beachside bar, and stayed for some dinner of moules (mussels) , frites (French fries), soup, salad, and a Tarte Tatin.

Back to the hotel and high hopes that I could make the computer connect, but to no avail.  Quelle domage!  I’ll try again tomorrow.

  1. Chris, we are home and had a great experience. We didn't try the connection at the apartment but the first time we tried to check email on a French computer we had trouble until we realized the French keyboard makes you shift to use numbers. Of course you have your own computer but you already know my phone didn't work either. Technology can be so frustrating! We rented a car with GPS which was very helpful. I think I captured almost the same picture of Monet's garden and of Honfleur. Jim got so excited about the Bayeux tapestry that he bought 2 books. I was surprised he didn't buy any books at the Caen Memorial but as he said he had been studying that since he was about 10 years old and it caught his fancy. I'm so jealous that you have so much time in France, but I'm very grateful for the week we had.

  2. The Bayeaux tapestry is amazing, isn't it? When we visited the American Cemetery we were overcome with emotion, and the Normandy landing beaches are such solemn places. I would love to go back again and take it all in a second time. It is truly an experience! Didn't you feel it when you were there?
